This is a statement delivered by His Excellency the State President Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika when he launched the 2010 SMS campaign for the Malawi national football side, the Flames on Thursday in the administrative capital, Lilongwe.

PRESS STATEMENT

Malawi Woyee! Malawi Woyee! Flames Woyee!

My fellow Malawians, development of sports in general and football in particular, requires a multi-sectoral approach. As a nation, we are always happy when ‘Flames’ wins and sad when the team loses. This is a clear manifestation that we are all concerned about the development of sports in the country.

Our senior national football team has done us proud for qualifying the 3rd stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations. Even in the SADC region we are among the three teams which have reached this far. I am aware that it is toll order to qualify for 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, which in my case, will be a big achievement.

My fellow Malawians, in order to supplement what Government is already doing in football development, let us support the 2010 Flames SMS campaign which is spearheaded by Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) in conjunction with the Ministry of Development and Sports and the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), by sending as many SMSs as possible from both TNM and Zain mobile phones and cash donations from the private sector towards this nation cause.

With these few remarks, I urge all Malawians to participate in this campaign.

I thank you all for your attention.

May God Bless You All-Malawi Digest.
