Parliamentarians right on marriage

Dear Editor,

I write to express my disappointment with people condemning Members of Parliament for putting the legal marriage age at 16.

I see nothing wrong with 16 being legal marriage age for girls.

In the United Kingdom and other developed countries, a 16-year-old girl is regarded as mature to make decisions on marriage and education, of course with the assistance of guardians and parents.

Laws are supposed to serve not enslave people.

Laws are supposed to reflect realities on the ground.

The truth is that most people, especially in rural areas, marry at the age of 15 or even less.

Let us not cast a blind eye to realities.
