Dr Mutharika in Rome for FAO's food summit

Malawi President Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika left the country on Sunday for the World Food summit in Rome, Italy.

The event is organised by the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

The president, left through the Kamuzu International Airport in the administrative capital, Lilongwe.

He was seen off at the airport by Malawi Vice President Joyce Banda, Army Commander Marko Chidziko and Inspector General of Police Peter Mukhitho among other high ranking officials.

Speaking to journalists before departure, President Dr Mutharika said that he was going to the summit to discuss with fellow leaders on how best the world can get rid of hunger.

“It is our wish that the whole world should have no country that is facing acute food shortages,” he said.

Ngwazi Dr Mutharika said that he was pleased that Malawi had become a model country that has successfully fought hunger.

The President disclosed that from Rome, he will proceed to the Islands of Trinidad and Tobago for this year’s Commonwealth Summit.

Commonwealth is a grouping countries formally colonised by the British and Queen Elizabeth the second is the head of the organisation.

Joked the president: “So if I delay coming back home, don’t say I have run away, from Rome I will be going to this Commonwealth Summit.”

It was a pride for every Malawian to see the president travel in the brand new presidential jet decorated in Malawian colours.

The new presidential jet has been inscribed with ‘Republic of Malawi’ on both sides and the Malawian flag at its tail.

It also has the Malawi presidential standard bearer on its door-Malawi Digest.
