Nations Cup Flames to camp in Turkey

The Malawi national football side, the Flames are expected to leave next month for a training camp in Europe, Malawi Digest understands.

The Flames, recently qualified for the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be held in Angola from the 10th of January next year.

The Flames are in Group A playing with the hosts Angola, Mali and Algeria. Group A will be based in the Angolan capital, Luanda.

Speaking to Malawi Digest Monday evening, a senior Football Association of Malawi (FAM) official confirmed that a proposal had been put forward to government for an overseas training camp.

“Denmark and Turkey were mentioned and Turkey has been seen to be a better option,” said the official who did not want to be mentioned as he had not been sanctioned by his superiors to disclose this.

He said an agent hired by FAM is working around the clock to identify top Turkish clubs that may be available to play friendlies when the Flames camp in Turkey.

FAM President Water Nyamirandu Manda disclosed to the press on Monday that they have opted to have a training camp in Europe where there are better training facilities.

He also disclosed that they have proposed to government that Flames mentor Kinnah Phiri be sent on a two week attachment to any top Danish clubs.

The Flames will be appearing at the Nations Cup finals in Angola for the first time in 25 years-Malawi Digest.
