Dr Mutharika cheers Karonga quake victims

Malawi President Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika, on Monday this week visited some victims of the series of earthquakes that have hit some parts of the northern region including Karonga.

During the visit, the State President cheered the victims and ordered for their immediate re-settlement.

As part of his efforts to alleviate the suffering of the people, President Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika also donated MK2.5 million to the nearly 4,000 natural calamity victims.

There have been a series of earthquakes that have hit the northern lakeshore district of Karonga that has resulted in the displacement of thousands of people.

At least one person has been confirmed dead as a result of this catastrophe with several others injured and the Bingu wa Mutharika led government has swiftly moved in to help the victims.

The Malawi government through the Department for Disaster Management Affairs in the Office of President and Cabinet is also assisting the victims with relief materials like tents, plastic sheets, blankets, cooking utensils, beans, sugar, salt and the country’s staple food maize.

Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs Lilian Ng’oma has appealed for help for the all Malawians including the private sector saying the victims require urgent help that may not be solicited from government alone.
