Malawi Flames 2010 preparations on track

By Frank Malemia

Malawi national football team coach Kinnah Phiri says that Flames preparations for the 2010 Nations Cup finals in Angola are right on track.

He was speaking soon after arriving in the country from the neighbouring Mozambique where his side played against the Mambas of that country.

Both teams have qualified for the finals in Angola and this was a good test for the Flames who came out victors, 0-1 away.

The two southern African giants played their friendly international in the Mozambican province of Tete.

Speaking in an interview, the Flames mentor said that he was pleased with the outcome of the match especially that his team managed to secure an away match victory.

He said the game on Saturday, offered him an opportunity to assess the players most of which were locally based.

“So far we can say that the preparations for Angola are right on track and that this weekend’s win has boosted the players’ morale in camp,” he said.

The coach said that the remaining friendly internationals with Egypt, Togo and Ghana will allow him fine tune his players ahead of the Nations Cup.

“We are leaving nothing to chance and we are seriously preparing to prove our critics wrong in Angola,” said the coach.

Meanwhile, the Flames depart this coming Saturday for Cairo, Egypt where they play the Pharaohs on December 29th.

After the friendly in Egypt, the Flames fly back home to play Togo at Kamuzu Stadium before proceeding to Swaziland where they will camp for a few days.

During the camp in Swaziland, the Flames will play the Black Stars of Ghana on January 5th before landing themselves in Luanda, Angola for the 2010 Nations Cup finals-Malawi Digest.
